Write Killer Research Objectives
Research objectives are the foundation of EVERY. SINGLE. RESEARCH. PROJECT.
Good research objectives could be the difference between stakeholders singing your praises, or questioning the entire project (and any future work you do with/for them).
Yet, this is the part of the project that often gets the least amount of attention.
In my career leading research teams at Twitter and Panasonic, I have seen many UX researchers, customer researchers, product researchers, and market researchers write bad research objectives.
They make critical errors like:
- Using verbs like define or understand in the objective or question
- Not connecting the objective to a business outcome
- Not advising the business what they should do with the research
- Focusing on data rather than outcomes
- Focusing on the wrong thing altogether
Good research objectives can save mediocre research and lead to great outcomes.
Bad research objectives will lead to bad outcomes—even with exceptional research.
To do this, you must not only be expert at research, i.e. investigating and making sense of data. You must also be experts at advising the business, educating stakeholders, and inspiring action.
Researchers should never deliver data. Researchers shouldn't deliver insights. Researchers should deliver counsel.
Stakeholder outcomes should be the North Star for this counsel.
This toolkit will help you write killer research objectives.
You will discover:
- How to amplify the impact of your research by simply writing better research objectives
- The MOAT framework for writing research objectives
- A MOAT checklist to ensure you are only writing high value research objectives
- Guidelines to help you ensure stakeholders are taking action from the insights you provide
This process is the same one I have used to generate insights for Twitter and Panasonic—and I am going to share them with you.
If you are looking for a bunch of theory, this isn’t for you. I only cover the topics that matter and remove the filler and fluff that gets in the way and prevents you from taking action.
But if you are looking for a step-by-step process to write research questions and objectives, check it out.
The quality of your research objectives are directly correlated to the quality of your insights.
Are your objectives dialed in?
